Back home with one-way car hire
CarTrawler one way car hire on lastminuteportal.comCarTrawler During the recent shutdown of European aviation due to the ashes from the Icelandic vulcano of Eyjafallajokull, thousands of passengers have been stranded at airports all over northern and central Europe. Train service at this time is overbooked or disrupted by strikes (France), and it's almost impossible to get a last minute reservation to travel across the European continent on fast trains. Even worst, since the vulcano eruption is still going on and hashes may stay in the upper levels of the athmosphere even for years, nobody can truly tell you clearly when flights can be safely resumed

This is how we hired a car one-way with CarTrawler to go back home when we were stranded a few days ago:Even if cars may not be available at agencies into town, airport locations may have plenty of vehicles available to rent. You can quite easily get a cheap rate online using CarTrawler for one-way rental from most airport locations around Europe. In case a larger airport is momentarily out of car supply, it is worth trying at a smaller airport location where we found rental cars stacked and ready to go. Most large airports have direct train or bus connection to smaller airports nearby.

Here are some examples, when we checked rates on CarTrawler on April 17, 2010:
- We travelled with a brand new Mercedes from Bremen airport in Northern Germany to Milano in about 10 hours. car rental cost including full insurance was about 350.00 Euros. If you travel in a prty of two or more, renting a car can be even cheaper than buying train tickets (if you're lucky to find them)
- Paris to Milano, Italy is 363.00 Euros on a Volkswagen Golf or 467 Euro one way from Paris with drop-off in Rome.
- Milan to Rome one-way is rated at 156.00 Euros, all taxes and full insurance included (cheaper rates are also available on economy cars)

Here is a suggestion when you book online:
If cars are unavailable into town, try to get a car at the nearest airport, and also try a drop-off at the airport closest to your destination. This trick sometimes shows cars available online that do not appear otherwise in the system. If nothing available show up, try another day or smaller towns or locations nearby

We used CarTrawler, a car hire/car rental broker that makes cars available from AVIS, Europcar, National, Sixt, Alamo, Budget, Dollar, Thrifty.com, Fox, Enterprise and Payless with large discounts, that mostly exceed any corporate or promotional rate when you book directly. When checking multiple destinations in Europe and the USA, we hardly found any cheaper car available with full insurance

If you are stranded at airports or train stations across Europe we wish you a fast and happy return back home with one-way rental!
